Tag Rugby Tournament 2009
Catch Me If You Can!
It is safe to say that Blanchelande College is not best known for its prowess on the rugby field, but the junior girls certainly showed the boys what they are capable of when they recently took part in the 10th Annual Junior Tag Rugby Tournament (2009).
Girls from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 from both Blanchelande and Ladies’ Colleges were invited to join Beechwood in entering the junior island schools competition. Beechwood entered 3 teams in each of the lower and upper junior categories. The game is played 7 a-side and there must be at least one girl on the pitch at all times. The tournament was held at the Garenne Stand and was well supported by parents and friends.
The teams got off to a nervous start as they found their feet and started working together as a team. Eloise was full of energy for the Beechwood Springboks (Yrs 3 & 4) who made it to the quarter finals.
The year 5 & 6 girls soon got the hang of it and quickly earned the respect of the boys as they progressed through the early rounds of the competition. Here, Lily-Mae lines up with the Beechwood Saxons (Yrs 5 & 6) ready for a kick off having scored yet again!
A promising drift defence is ably demonstrated here as Victoria covers good ground to stop an attack from the favourites, Forest Tigers.
The quarter finals for Years 5 & 6 saw the Beechwood Saxons who were undefeated (with Blanchelande girls) competing against the Beechwood Pumas who had 2 wins and 2 draws (with Ladies’ College girls). The Saxons dominated from the start and were worthy winners . . . and yes, they were very happy about it!
The Saxons went on to win the years 5 & 6 competition and are seen here with the trophy and the Head of Collins Stewart Wealth Management, Charlie Roger.
Congratulations to the Blanchelande Year 5 girls Cody Martin, Lily-Mae Matthews and Victoria Chammings. Well done Eloise Tanguy from Year 3 for her sterling efforts with the Beechwood Springboks.
Maybe next year, we can get even more girls involved in what was a very enjoyable day of tag rugby.
