What Blanchelande offers

Since its foundation in 1902, Blanchelande College has offered a Catholic education to pupils from a range of backgrounds and beliefs, and the College exists to help parents in raising confident, joyful and well-rounded young people. We do so by helping to foster moral responsibility and a sense of a higher purpose alongside an excellent academic education.

Results at GCSE and A-Level are excellent and in our most recent inspection (October 2018) the College was rated ‘excellent’ in all categories and met all the standards.

Open Morning and visits

Our whole-school open morning is held each year in late September. In addition, we are always pleased to welcome by appointment parents and families to Blanchelande for a tour and the opportunity of a meeting with the Principal or member of the Senior Leadership Team. Assessment visits, followed by a taster day,  are arranged throughout the year and are the best way to find out what the College is really like. All visits are arranged through our Registrar, Sonia Hollowell.

When to join

Pupils can join the College into any year group (Nursery – Sixth Form) where places are available. Nursery children have the option of reserving a place in Reception, and pupils in Year 6 transfer automatically into the senior school. Just contact our Registrar if you’d like to enquire about whether a space is available in your child’s year group.

Entry into the Infant school (Year 1)

Blanchelande’s Infant school is for boys and girls aged 4-7. Reception and Years 1 and 2 are housed in the heart of the school, with direct access to indoor and outdoor learning areas  (including the new playground and decking created which opened in September 2023). As well as the all-weather playground next to their classrooms, Infants have a beautiful grassed playground and outdoor learning area just a short walk down in the Vauxbelets valley. Class sizes are small and Infants applying to Blanchelande do not take an assessment; Nursery and Reception places are assigned based on application and a visit/meeting with the Head of Infants. Places are offered to Year 1 and 2 children are conditional on a satisfactory taster day.

Entry into the junior school (Year 3)

With just one class in Years 3 and 4, we are often oversubscribed and therefore we advise applying early on in your child’s education. However, we open a second class from Year 5 (and a third class in Year 7) so additional places do become available at the key entry points. For a place in the Juniors, an assessment visit is arranged, followed by a taster day. In year groups where we are oversubscribed it is possible to take the assessment and join our waiting list.

Entry into the senior school (Year 7)

Pupils in Blanchelande’s Junior School transfer automatically from Year 6 into Year 7, with no additional acceptance form required. In the rare instance of a pupil from Year 6 not transitioning to Year 7 at Blanchelande, a term’s notice is required as per the College terms and conditions. External applicants are advised to register as early as possible as places in Year 7 are limited. Places are occasionally available in other senior year groups; the Registrar will be able to advise prospective families on their application.

Entry into the Sixth Form (Year 12-13)

Blanchelande’s Sixth Form offers outstanding A-Level provision in a small, seminar-style learning environment with access to a superb library and a comfortable, well-appointed Common Room. If your son or daughter is currently at another school and you are considering a Sixth Form place with us, we would be delighted to hear from you; informal tours are available. For information about our Sixth Form, or to meet Mr Noble (Head of Sixth Form), please contact our Registrar.

Entrance criteria (Infants – Y12)

Every pupil who is offered a place at the College has to satisfy certain criteria:

  • A satisfactory assessment in English and Maths, to ensure that they will find our curriculum accessible
  • A satisfactory taster day
  • A satisfactory reference from their current school
  • Parents also meet the Principal or another member of the Senior Leadership Team to learn about the College and ask any questions that they may have.

Sixth Form places are offered on the basis of fulfilling an offer at GCSE (and, if an external applicant, a sound reference).

Fees

Fees for the academic year 2023/24 are £4,250 per term. Fees are one rate throughout the Primary, Senior and Sixth Form phases of the school (except for Nursery).  Please visit our fees page for further details.
