Welcome to the Blanchelande Seniors

Students in senior years receive a well-balanced curriculum of liberal arts (academic subjects, which perfect the intellect), fine arts (which involve creating beauty), and useful arts (which aim for utility and skill, especially in technical fields).

With class sizes around 20 teachers are able to focus on finding each student’s individual strengths. Additional one to one provision is also available through our Learning Support department.

Lower Seniors: Years 7-9

Pupils in the senior school enjoy and broad and stimulating curriculum, studying English, Maths, Biology, Physics, Science, RE, Classics (Latin), History, Geography, French, Spanish, Art, Computing, Design Technology, Food and Nutrition, Music, PE/ Games and PSHE (including Relationships and Sex Education).

For our Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) curriculum booklet, Curriculum Booklet 2022 (2).

Upper Seniors: Years 10-11

All pupils in Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) study English, Maths, three Sciences (either as single or combined), RE and PSHE (including Relationships and Sex Education), as well as three GCSE option subjects (including a number of subjects not studied in Key Stage 3, such as Psychology, Business Studies and Computer Science).

Reading lists

Blanchelande promotes reading throughout the school and our library team are pleased to share recommended reading lists.

Digital Literacy

All students have full use of their own school Microsoft Office 365 account, with MS Teams as the main school platform. This is accessible both at school and from home. Although students in our senior school do not use their own devices at school (unless for certain SENs), students can have a fully integrated experience by downloading the Microsoft apps to their personal phones. From the Sixth Form, students have full laptop use in school.

FOSIL – inquiry-based learning

Using the internationally recognised FOSIL framework (created by our Head of Inquiry-Based Learning, Darryl Toerien), students develop the skills and attitudes required for independent inquiry systematically and progressively from Reception through to Year 13. This bears fruit through Signature Work – inquiry units through which students extensively explore a relevant question (sometimes across multiple subject areas) and create a meaningful product. For example, in Year 6 pupils undertake a structured and guided year-long inquiry across Art & Design, English, ICT, Library and Maths leading to a Bronze CREST Award.

‘Bringing home the gold’

Inspired by the Hero’s Journey, Blanchelande students flourish in an atmosphere of high aspiration and high encouragement. Students from Year 3 – Year 13 attend the Principal’s assembly each Friday morning at which the achievements of pupils across all Phases are celebrated (with awards including merits, badges, stickers and the coveted ‘Dragon Slayer Mug). The Blanchelande Diploma is a unique personal development programme that runs in every year from Year 3-13.
